Michael Carley - Economics, Mathematics, Spanish, and Surf PE
Michael joined our Cal Coast Academy instructional staff in 2008 and brought with him a wealth of global knowledge. As a graduate of California State University San Marcos, Michael earned his B.S. in Business Administration with an emphasis in Global Business Management. Integrating his extensive world-travel experiences, Michael infuses into the classroom fresh, global perspectives through unique and inspiring lessons. Recreationally, Michael can be found volunteering to educate upper-grade children at Birch Aquarium in La Jolla, surfing, skating, snowboarding, or participating in various earth and wildlife preservation events.
Katy Clarke - Mathematics, Science, and Surf PE
Katy, who directs our Science Department has a B.S. in Zoology/Biology and significant field experience. She has spent time designing research protocols and conducting field investigations on tropical biology in Costa Rica. She has worked with Escondido's Eco-Life Foundation and has been an active member of the Urban Interface Risk Management Research Team since 2004. During her eight years at Cal Coast, Katy has taught chemistry, AP Chemistry, biology, AP Biology, middle school life, earth and physical science, various math courses and Surf P.E.. Katy's extensive knowledge in the science field in addition to her passion for the subject excite her classes.
Renee Dunn - AP English, High School English, Geometry, and Yoga PE
Renee began with us at the commencement of our 2008-2009 school year from Washington state where she had taught for three years. Renee acquired a B.A. in Liberal Studies with an emphasis in Education and then subsequently obtained a Multiple Subject Teaching Credential from San Diego State University including an English Supplemental Degree. Since that time Renee has accrued 30 semester units of Graduate Studies. Currently, Renee teaches AP English, English 12, English 11, English 9, Geometry, and Yoga PE at Cal Coast Academy. In years past, Renee has also instructed at many of our private Home-Site locations as well.
Katie Huetinck - Photography I, Photography II, and Yearbook
Katie came on board mid-year of 2006 to assist a newly-enrolled student who needed individualized attention. She was so effective, we asked her to stay. Katie continues to work 1:1 with students in need, but is also conveying her knowledge, passion, and artistic eye as our photography teacher. Katie's beginning photography course received such accolades from our students that she developed the curriculum to accommodate a Photography II course as well. A natural progression from the interest in photography was naturally a yearbook course, so in 2007 Katie began directing the production of our annual school yearbook. Katie has a B.A. in Liberal Arts, a multiple subject CLAD emphasized teaching credential and a Master of Arts degree. Katie continues to be a wonderful contribution to our school.
Cheryl Sloane - AP Government, AP U.S. History, Economics, and Government
Cheryl comes to Cal Coast Academy with a long resume replete with qualifications and experience. She received her B.A. in History Education in 1969 and has been preparing students in honors and AP courses ever since. She has taught AP European History, AP U.S. History, AP U.S. Government, AP Comparative Government, Honors World History, and Honors U.S. History. Cheryl served as social studies department chair for the Los Angeles Unified School District from 1987-2005 when she moved to San Diego. A few of Cheryl's long list of accomplishments include: creating materials for "Homeroom Project for Stanford" from 1998-2002, teaching International Relations through the National Academy of Finance, and membership in California Senate Commission for Education from 2001-2003. Cheryl became disenchanted with the large public school classes, and finds Cal Coast Academy's small-class effective teaching refreshing.
John Hickey - ACT/SAT Prep, Mathematics, and Science
In 2008, John nestled into Cal Coast Academy as our premiere mathematics teacher. Having been associated with Cal Coast Academy as a substitute teacher and as an after-school tutor, John has established himself as an invaluable instructor. John earned his B.A. from the University of California, San Diego in 2006 and has since dedicated his talents to the educational field. An avid sports fan, John likes to spend his recreational time engaging in basketball and football.
Meggan Murphy - Jr. High English, High School English, and AP English
Meggan began as a substitute teacher at Cal Coast Academy in 2005. She expressed interest in a contracted position should one become available, and soon after she was offered and accepted a position as our middle school and 12th grade English teacher. During the 2007-2008 school year, Meggan expanded her teaching responsibilities to include English 9, English 10 and AP English Literature. Over the following 2008-2009 year Meggan began instructing our English 11 and AP English Language courses. By the end of our 2008-2009 school year, Meggan had officially taught every level of English that we offer at Cal Coast Academy. Meggan has a B.A. in Literature and Writing and has completed graduate work in Philosophy. Meggan began her teaching career at Catapalt Learning on the Pala Reservation before finding her way to Cal Coast Academy.
Edmund James "E.J." Campbell - World History and AP European History
EJ is the newest addition to our esteemed Cal Coast Academy faculty. After receiving his B.A. in Asian and Eastern European History from the University of Oregon, his Masters in Education from the University of Phoenix, and his California State Teaching Credential, Mr. Campbell began work at Cathedral Catholic High School as a social sciences substitute teacher. Beginning at Cal Coast Academy in 2013, EJ quickly became a student favorite. Mr. Campbell has an incredible ability to bring History to life and his students are forever saying, "I never liked History until I took one of EJ's classes. In addition to his instruction at Cal Coast, EJ is the Varsity & JV offensive line coach at Hilltop High School.
Barak Smith - AP Art History and AP English
Mr. Smith's colorful background includes many years of teaching experience and a strong passion for all things Art. Moving to California from Aix-en-Provence, France in 2002, Barak earned his B.A. in Visual Arts from the University of California San Diego. Thereafter, he attended Chapman University and earned his California State Teaching Credential and his Masters of Humanities with an emphasis in Art from Cal State Dominguez Hills. Barak is in his second year teaching at Cal Coast. He instructs AP Art History and AP English. He also works as a teacher and Fine Arts Department Chair at The Preuss School UCSD. Barak continually proves to be an irreplaceable instructor as he captivates his students through his extensive knowledge, love for Art, and the art of teaching.
Keirstin Gaspare - Spanish and US History
Keirstin began teaching Spanish at Cal Coast Academy during the 2011-2012 school year. Prior to Cal Coast she taught 7th and 8th grade supplemental English and Math classes to inner-city youth in Philadelphia and lead students on Summer Immersion Trips through Mexico and Ecuador through Saint Joseph's University. In addition to her daily instruction, Keirstin is the coordinator for Cal Coast Academy's Learn on Location annual school trip. This unique program provides Cal Coast Academy students with the exciting opportunity to travel, Nationally and Internationally, and broaden their understanding of the world. Keirstin has her B.A. in International Relations and Spanish and a Latin American Studies Minor from Saint Louis University in Madrid, Spain. Keirstin has spent considerable time in Ecuador, Spain, and Mexico. Keirstin provides her students with an opportunity to immerse themselves in Spanish as she speaks and asks questions to them primarily in Spanish.
Monica Garza - ASL I, ASL II, ASL III, and Cooking
Monica joined Cal Coast Academy in 2012 as an American Sign Language instructor. Graduating from Columbia College Chicago, Monica earned her B.A. in American Sign Language. Monica is fluent in ASL and her previous three year experience includes volunteering in Jamaica at the Jamaican Association for the Deaf and interpreting for the national touring band Your Little Ponies. In addition to her ASL I, II and III instruction, Monica puts her culinary expertise to good use as she stirs up some mouth watering dishes along side the students in her Cooking class. With her ingenious teaching methods, strong understanding of Deaf culture, excellent sign-to-voice and voice-to-sign interpreting/transliterating skills and impressive culinary achievements, Monica will remain a welcomed presence at Cal Coast Academy for many years to come.
Eileen Ryan – Home-Site Instruction
Eileen began teaching at Cal Coast Academy in 2011 as an instructor at one of our Home-Site locations, Eileen’s diverse teaching talents have already proven to be extremely beneficial. Her Single Subject Teaching Credential along with M.Ed. in English Language Arts and B.A. in English have yielded incredible dividends in the lives of her Home-Site students. In addition to teaching a plethora of academic subjects including all levels of English, Eileen has worked as a teacher as well as a tutor and has prepared students for both the ACT and SAT tests. Eileen’s contagious enthusiasm coupled with her gift for creative education has been a wonderful asset and we are grateful to have her on our Cal Coast team.
Elizabeth King – English, Spanish, and Home-Site Instruction
Elizabeth’s eight years of teaching experience has afforded her the ability to effectively deliver and prepare rich and captivating lesson plans that successfully meet the needs of both basic skills students and advanced placement students. While earning her B.A. in English Literature and Spanish from Point Loma Nazarene University and a Single Subject Cross-Cultural, Language, and Academic Development Credential in English from San Diego State University, Elizabeth was given the unique opportunity to teach ESL to students from all over the world. Additionally, Elizabeth has received her M.A. in English with an emphasis in American Literature. Elizabeth has a natural talent for creating and delivering one of a kind learning experiences. Her students continually meet and exceed course goals.
JJ Rice - Skate PE
Mr. JJ Rice, Cal Coast Academy's Skate PE teacher, seamlessly blends his impressive qualifications and years of experience in skateboarding with his love for teaching. JJ's numerous skateboarding accomplishments include sponsorships by TURF Skateboards, Powell Peralta Skateboards, and Bones Wheels. He has competed in competitions across California and Arizona and has been a member of the Skate One Factory Ams team since 2007. JJ's passion for skateboarding and enthusiasm for his class is recognized by all.
Brea Thomas - High School English, AP English, Spanish I and II, and International Leadership
Though Brea is new to Cal Coast Academy this past 2012-2013 school year, she is anything but new to education. As a graduate of Butler University Indianapolis and American University Washington, Brea has earned her M.A. in Literature and B.A. in English, Business and Spanish. In 2010, Brea received her Teaching Credential from Marian University Indianapolis. In years past, Brea has been honored with a number of prestigious awards such as Future Leader, Woman of Distinction and Teacher of the Year. Additionally, Brea has received notable recognition throught the National Society of Collegiate Scholars and as one of the Top 10 Female Students of Butler University. Currently, Brea instructs every level of High School English including Advanced Placement, Spanish I and II, as well as our International Leadership course. This dynamic new addition has proven herself to be a multi-talented teacher who knows how to successfully deliver rigorous college preparatory curriculum allowing her students to excel in their studies.
Oliver Refugio - Human Anatomy & Physiology and Chemistry
Oliver Refugio has taught a plethora of courses during his five years at Cal Coast. His B.S. in Physiology & Neuroscience coupled with his Minor in Healthcare-Social Issues from the University of California, San Diego has prepared him to teach a collection of courses including Physiology, Developmental and Cellular Neurobiology, Biochemistry, Genetics, Cell Biology, Endocrinology, Molecular Biology, Inorganic and Organic Chemistry, Nutrition, Calculus, Statistics, and Physics. Oliver has assisted both ER and OR doctors at Sharp Memorial Hospital, San Diego while working as an Emergency Room volunteer and an Operating/Surgery Room volunteer. Oliver presents his students with thought provoking lessons and engages them in hands-on labs. Oliver's Biology and Chemistry classes draw students from every local school as his well-deserved reputation for being an extraordinary teacher spreads.
John Sciarratta - Art and Graphic Design
John's creative ability, artistic talent, and passion for teaching have been evident since the first day he began as an Art and Graphic Design instructor at Cal Coast Academy. Mr. Sciarratta received his B.S. in Art Education from the University at Buffalo New York. He augmented his degree with a New York State Certification in Art Education Grades K-12. John's impressive background also includes working as an assistant Art teacher and Art coordinator at the Essex Arts Center - The Ashford Hollow Foundation in Buffalo, New York, and as an English teacher at the Lingue Senza Frontiere in Candiolo, Italy. In addition, John has tremendous experience in curriculum development as well as administration of summer art enrichment camps. John has been an overwhelmingly positive influence on our student body with whom he has enriched through the world of art.
