STUDENTS IN THE BUSINESS OF SERVICE:
Cal Coast Academy's student-operated, 501c3, non-profit organization, Students in the Business of Service (SIBS), provides our student body with work experience that empowers them to excel in school, engage in the community, and develop life and leadership skills. SIBS students not only fine tune their public speaking and communication skills by delivering presentations at local businesses to help solicit community support and program understanding but, they also sew and deliver each and every item they create. Engaging in community service projects and the development of practical skills also contribute to the students' awareness of our school ESLRs.
With oversight from our school appointed SIBS Director, Students in the Business of Service is operated by the students who attend Cal Coast Academy. Since 2007, SIBS has been partnering with Rady Children's Hospital by providing handcrafted decorative pillow cases and neonatal swaddling blankets for the 143,000 sick and injured children who are receiving care through the hospital annually.
"My conception for this community outreach program was to develop an avenue whereby our students are exposed to the world of business while they experience the value of giving to those less fortunate," says Ms. Jan Dunning, director and founder of Cal Coast Academy's SIBS program. "This has been an extremely rewarding experience for all participants while we brighten each recipient's stay at the hospital. Rady Children's Hospital has been an exceptional partner and we are honored to be associated with them."
You don't have to be a big corporation to make a big difference. Our students' dedication along with business donations, impact so many of San Diego's young people. Rarely does a single donation serve two beneficiaries: teens who need to feel that they are an integral part of our community through their contributions, and the young patients at Rady Children's Hospital.

MARY JANE FREDERICKS:
Mrs. Mary Jane Fredericks is not only an advocate of community service but, she has spearheaded countless projects for the San Diego community and neighboring communities over the past two decades. Monthly trips to Mexico have provided Mary Jane the opportunity to bring supplies to the local residents and cut hair, while her husband Dr. John Fredericks, an emergency room doctor, saw to their medical needs. The Fredericks have also opened their homes to children and young adults who have needed a place to call home, a meal, or simply someone to confide in. While Mary Jane is active in community projects, she also operates her own interior design business, Faux Real. Creating designs that are "out of the box" are Mary Jane's specialty.
Though Mary Jane has spent considerable time serving others in the greater San Diego area, her greatest achievement has been in being a wife and raising three loving sons.
Ms. Jan Dunning began her 37 year teaching career instructing for two local school districts, Carlsbad and San Dieguito Union High School Districts. In 1977 she began the first tutoring agency in San Diego County, North County Tutoring Agency, followed by the first off-campus accredited high school courses in the late 1980's. In 1997, Ms. Dunning opened Cal Coast Academy, a college preparatory private school in Del Mar which serves students who desire or require tailored education and/or customized scheduling. In an effort to further prepare the student body at Cal Coast Academy for life while they give back to our community, Ms. Dunning created the student-operated 501c3, non-profit organization, Students in the Business of Service.
